Wales’s recycling rates among the best in the world

With sustainable development as a constitutional duty, Wales has set out on a path to become a truly sustainable nation.

This path takes time and resources and plenty of joined-up effort. So we guess you could say that we were quite pleased when a new independent report showed that Wales is the third best recycling nation in the world. Efforts recognised – tick!

Although the recognition is good, for Wales it’s not about ticking boxes. It’s about improving the social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being of Wales - now and for future generations. That is why Wales is now recycling double the amount it did a decade ago, and has set a recycling target of 70% by 2024/25.

The report, published on 13 March by Eunomia Research & Consulting Ltd, also highlights that Wales is ranked in second place in Europe, just behind Germany and continues to lead the way in the UK when it comes to recycling.

Resource Media, one of the authors of the report, said ‘however the statistics are viewed, Wales’s progress in getting to the top handful of countries is extraordinary…’

We’ve already said that it’s not about ticking boxes…but if we were….world leading – tick!
