This project aims to raise awareness of Wales in Japan, to develop and promote trade and investment opportunities and to showcase Wales as a creative nation committed to sustainability and innovation.
In particular, the thread of sustainability and innovation should be prominent throughout and aligns with Expo priorities and themes. Wales’ commitment to the UN Sustainability Goals, exemplified by its Well-being of Future Generations Act, ensuring Wales is well placed to capitalise on Japan’s (and EXPO’s) focus on sustainability and innovation.
Wales and Japan
While there might be five thousand miles between the two countries, our cultures and connections are closer than you might think.
It’s a friendship forged over the centuries but focused on the future.
Over 150 years ago, Welsh steel laid the track for Japan’s railways. Since the 1970s, high-tech investment has flowed from east to west.
Wales has played a part in saving seaweed. In inspiring Studio Ghibli. In planting forests to help the Japanese live in harmony with nature.
From the classroom to castles, the boardroom to the sports field, Wales and Japan are bound by economic, educational and cultural bonds.
And now it’s time for the next chapter.
For future generations to thrive, the world needs urgent and transformational action.
In Wales, a radical change means that every decision is made with tomorrow in mind.
Japan is on that journey too.
Huge opportunities exist to work together on innovative technologies. Making our world safe and sustainable for generations to come.
Two nations that cherish their past. Live well in the present. And play their part in constructing a better future - for people and planet.
In 2025, Wales and Japan have a chance to change the world.
