In 2025, Welsh cinema is set to captivate audiences both locally and internationally with a wide array of films showcasing the rich talent and diverse landscapes of Wales. This year, Welsh-connected films are not just about local culture but span global stories, featuring everything from an extravagant tale of an Anglesey Marquess to poignant narratives set in the lush landscapes of Laos.

Spring will see the release of Joshua Trigg's debut feature, Satu – Year of the Rabbit. Born in Powys, Trigg transports viewers to Laos where two children embark on a visually stunning coming-of-age journey, discovering family, friendship, and the beauty of everyday life.

Among the most anticipated films premiering at the Sundance Film Festival 2025 is Brides, produced by ie ie Productions. This poignant drama follows two teenage girls who flee the UK with the perilous ambition of reaching Syria. "Filming in Wales was an absolute privilege," says producer Alice Lusher. "This international collaboration allowed us to showcase the incredible talent and dedication of local crews and businesses across Wales, Turkey, and Sicily."

Action and suspense lovers will be thrilled with Havoc, directed by Gareth Evans, famed for The Raid. Starring Tom Hardy and Forest Whitaker, the film, shot in Cardiff, delves into a world of crime, corruption, and conspiracy. Another gripping tale, The Man in My Basement, features Willem Dafoe and was filmed in Carmarthenshire by Welsh producer John Giwa-Amu.

Welsh heritage also shines through in the re-release of the 2002 BAFTA winner Oed yr Addewid, a film exploring themes of political disillusionment and aging, resonating strongly two decades after its first release. Additionally, Film Hub Wales is enhancing film accessibility and representation through its year-long project, Cymru Anabl, which focuses on the stories of disabled and Deaf filmmakers.
