Rosmy Thomas – Kerala, India – Cardiff Metropolitan University, MSc Food Science and Technology – Global Wales Postgraduate Scholarship
When Rosmy began planning her move from India to Wales, her overwhelming feeling was one of fear at the prospect of settling in a new country.
But she quickly discovered the sense of empowerment that comes with a newfound independence.
“After coming here I got myself that confidence that I can do things by myself, I can handle myself and I don’t want to depend on anyone,” Rosmy said.
“I can do my part-time job. I can earn by myself. I can pay the tuition fees. I am confident in myself and personally I grew a lot. I became somewhat fearless. Now I can go anywhere in the world and do what I like. Seriously, this is an amazing opportunity to come to Wales.”
Rosmy came to Wales as part of the Global Wales Postgraduate Scholarship programme, an initiative offering scholarships worth up to £10,000 for students to pursue a full-time master's degree in Wales.
The scholarship is offered on behalf of the Global Wales Programme, a partnership between Universities Wales, ColegauCymru, Welsh Government, British Council Wales and Medr, funded by Taith.
Since beginning her studies in Wales, Rosmy has been struck by the greater focus on practical skills and the outstanding support she receives from her tutors.
“In India, it is more theoretical-based studying whereas in Wales it’s more practical-based,” Rosmy said. “That’s more helpful for us going into a job.
“And all the teachers are just amazing. They are just like friends. So if we want something or need to ask for something, they are there – just ask. It’s very easy to be with them and that’s my favourite thing.”
Rosmy also says Wales has been a great place to relax between studying, with plenty of beautiful natural scenery. But it’s the people who have really made her feel welcome.
“The people of Wales are very welcoming,” Rosmy said. “If you go somewhere in Wales, there’s always someone there to help. If you see someone for the first time, you will have a place in their heart. It’s networking. We can come to connect with them later, we can talk with them, so it helps in that professional space if you want someone to recommend, or if you want some space, they’re always ready to help.
“People here don’t treat us as outsiders. They make us feel at home.”
